CBC: Out in the Open's Holiday Survival Guide
Originally posted by dewline at CBC: Out in the Open's Holiday Survival Guide
Piya Chattopadhyah provides a guide to coping with some of the things we have to cope with during the winter holidays. Grief, alcoholism, bigoted relatives, staying away from home, interfaith coping...see if there's something here that helps you.

RIP: Gordie Tapp
Before my time, but it still matters to many, I suspect.

I just listened to her farewells. The show continues, and she moves on to other work...

RIP Bandwidth?
I've been reading condolence postings to Amanda Putz's Facebook page of late re: Bandwidth's fate in the wake of the latest round of budget cuts. Not happy about this...among other things.

Nightfall: Does Anyone Here Remember...?
...a science-fiction radio drama anthology on CBC going by that name in the first half of the 1980's?

Apparently, archive.org does...

Annoyed by the drama/comedy cutbacks...
...yes, still. Aside from the consequences to Afghanada and Trust Inc., knowing that other publicly owned broadcasters are still funding such projects is an annoyance. Not that I want them to stop, you see. But rather, that I want CBC to be free to resume.

An example of what I speak of from BBC's website: Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully.

An amusing concept, yes?

For those of us in Ontario: I'm not the only one who misses the old two-hour format, right?

Russ Germain RIP.
I just caught word on the latest news broadcast on the Ceeb.  It seems that Russ Germain, who used to anchor The World At Six, has died.

I remember Air Farce and Double XXPosure frequently making fun of his correct grammar and pronunciation.

andy barrie
On Metro Morning, Andy Barrie seems to have slipped off the radar. There has been no announcement that he's no longer hosting. He's just never (or almost never) there any more. I know that he has some longterm degenerative health condition (Parkinson's, I think), and perhaps this is the reason. Or perhaps he officially retired and I wasn't paying any attention. My hunch is that there's something going on, healthwise, and they're keeping quiet about it.

A stupid story on the Ceeb (Toronto) this morn.
It seems that there's a new virus attacking M$ based computers today. It's spread, not only through the Internet, but through shared media like flash drives and CDs. They talk as if this is something new, but in fact, this is the original way that they spread.

As for the one hapless girl they interviewed, who had to get a new computer because her old one became so riddled with worms and virii that she had to get a new one...can I have your old one? {Inserts Linux disk, formats drive, installs...)

CBC reporters really haven't a clue sometimes...

I saw Stuart McLean for the first time a few weeks ago, and it was really exciting for me. We got him to sign a CD we bought, it was for my Dad's birthday. Mr. McLean was especially nice and remembered my name, which felt really good. I saw him hold onto an older ladies arm and look her in the eye and directly thank her for coming the show. I'm not sure if she was taken aback or just rally taken by him ,heh.

We also got some of the other people who appeared on the show to sign CD's too.

I just joined this group, so hello!

bill richardson
Whatever happened to Bill Richardson on CBC Radio? Richardson's Roundup was a great show. So was Between the Covers. So was Bunny Watson. The guy did great radio shows, so why haven't I heard him on CBC for two years or more?

radio two's decision
Your thoughts on Radio Two's decision to play less classical music?

All I can say is: do they really think that they'll pick up new listeners this way?

jeff healey
Undoubtedly, by now, most of you have heard about the untimely death of Jeff Healey. I'm not much of a blues fan, but I share Healey's love for old jazz. Perhaps some of you remember the show he had on CBC Radio called My Kinda Jazz, where he featured music from his own extensive collection of 78s.

I don't know if any of you followed Canada Reads 2008. Personally, I felt that Timothy Findley's Not Wanted On The Voyage should have won. Your thoughts?

What did you do during the 2005 CBC strike?
Just curious: how did you weather the CBC strike in 2005?

I started listening to the University of Toronto radio station, CIUT (89.5 FM) for the morning show, because Andy Barrie transported pretty much the whole Metro Morning crew over there. As I recall, it was much more exciting than the usual Metro Morning show.

But beyond that, I just enjoyed all of the CBC radio re-broadcasts. :)
